Newsreel Footage – 1917 World Weries

November 15th, 2011

This also came to me through the SABR Black Sox Committee. Thanks to Jacob Pomrenke for sending this out.

John Thorn pointed out some incredible footage from a Hearst newsreel of Game 1 of the 1917 World Series that was posted at CriticalPast.com:

http://www.criticalpast.com/video/65675045978_base-ball-match_New-York-Giants_Chicago-White-Sox_Comiskey-Park

You can see clips of Eddie Cicotte and Slim Sallee warming up, the pregame meeting between Pants Rowland and John McGraw, a few in-game clips of plays, a shot of an African-American in the Giants dugout — could this be the White Sox’s longtime trainer, William Buckner? — and a scoreboard outside Comiskey Park as the White Sox are scoring in the third inning.

And here’s a different video from Games 3-4 at the Polo Grounds:

http://www.criticalpast.com/video/65675045977_base-ball-match_New-York-Giants_crowd-cheering_Giants-win

This one shows (around the 1:05 mark) Eddie Cicotte making a throwing error to first base in the fourth inning to let in the Giants’ second run! You can also see a Benny Kauff home run in Game 4 and the crowd exiting the Polo Grounds after the game.

14th Annual Banquet: A quick recap

November 6th, 2011

For the 105 attendees of the 14th Annual Banquet of the Rocky Mountain chapter of the Society of American Baseball Research, it was a memorable night. Filling up the Grand Ballroom at the Denver Athletic Club after navigating Friday night traffic in downtown Denver, all the guests were treated to a fine evening of baseball chatter and camaraderie, with the recently concluded World Series and the origins of baseball among the many topics discussed. The many items up for silent auction became eye candy for those in attendance, as was the table next to the dais where John Thorn, the night’s keynote speaker, was selling and autographing his latest book, Baseball in the Garden of Eden: The Secret History of the Early Game.

Jim Armstrong, esteemed sportswriter for the Denver Post and the evening’s MC, announced that dinner was served shortly after  7 pm. After all the guests had been served, some chapter business was attended to. Chapter secretary Matt Mitchell announced the newly elected members of the chapter’s board for 2012-13, with the final results out of 40 ballots cast:

  • President – Matthew Repplinger (37 votes)
  • Vice President – James “Jim” Powers (21) def. Katherine Surman (19)
  • Treasurer – David Glandorf (36)
  • Secretary – Matthew Mitchell (39)
  • At large Board members – Paul Parker (37), William “Chip” Atkison (37), John Paul (36), Lauren Cronin (34) elected. Write in candidate Nick Wilson (1) not elected.
Chapter treasurer David Glandorf then gave a report on the state of the chapter’s finances, which are in good shape. Chapter president Paul Parker then took to the podium to introduce some honored guests in the crowd, including anyone involved with the game of baseball at the professional level. He continued with a message of gratitude for his time in leadership of the chapter, naming almost everyone in the room (or so it seemed).
It was then time to move on to the evening’s program. Rob Neyer, National Baseball Editor for SB Nation and fellow SABR member, filled the role of Featured Speaker for the night. He talked about how he fell in love with the game of baseball, how he became involved in SABR and how that led to his career as a baseball writer. He then answered various questions afterward, with topics ranging from what stats he liked to use when writing blog posts to his passion for bird watching.
Afterward, Paul returned to the podium to award the John Zajc Award for service to the chapter to Alan Rice, the outgoing board member from Billings, MT. Alan was very surprised to get the award, and humbly accepted it claiming that all he did was “drive down from Billings a few times a year.” Nonetheless, Alan acted as a voice of reason when the board was discussing various events and topics. After that president-elect Matt Repplinger then gave some remarks about what SABR meant to him and his involvement in baseball.
The evening then reached the climax of the Keynote Speaker, John Thorn. As the Official Historian for Major League Baseball, John discussed his work with the Origins committee that Commissioner Allan H. “Bud” Selig requested he chair. He then highlighted his research on the Mills commission and why the myth of Abner Doubleday was perpetrated. John concluded with a glimpse into some of the upcoming activities that the Origins committee is undertaking, including a social media project to collect fans’ stories about their baseball origins and other endeavors.
Pictures of the event will be posted when available.

Election candidates

October 15th, 2011

Biographies of election candidates (to be updated as they are received):

Matthew Repplinger (President)

Kate Surman (Vice President)

James “Jim” Powers (Vice President)
I’ve been a SABR member since 1993 and have attended nine national SABR conventions.  I’ve also managed to watch baseball in 35 major league stadiums and 39 minor league ones.
My chapter experience includes having previously been an at-large member of the board of directors and its director of communications.
I believe that as many people as possible should be involved in not only attending, but planning chapter activities.  One of many ways to do this is to revitalize a former chapter research project – identifying places within our Rocky Mountain Region where organized baseball has been played. This project began well several years ago when chapter members marked the location of home plate at old Mile High Stadium and spearheaded the placement of informational signs at the current Sports Authority Field.  There are many more baseball places in our region that deserve recognition.  I’d like to see as many chapter members as possible involved in adding to our baseball heritage.
In past years, chapter members have made field trips to Colorado Springs and Casper, WY, to watch Rockies minor league teams in action.  I’d like to see these trips revived and expanded to other areas.  It’s a good way to meet members who don’t always make it to our Denver activities.
I’m also an advocate of board of directors meetings that are open to the general membership.  SABRites can get an idea of how the chapter functions, and have an opportunity to make suggestions and significant contributions.
