About
The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) was formed in August 1971 in Cooperstown New York. It now consists of more than 6,700 members — including many prominent writers, officials and players — worldwide. Along with its publications, SABR set the foundation for on-going baseball research by establishing three research committees in 1971 (Biographical, Minor Leagues, and Negro Leagues). Today, SABR has 19 research committees covering such topics as ballparks, baseball records, scouts and umpires. Any SABR member willing to help the committee’s efforts is eligible to participate.
SABR Regional groups exist in more than 30 locations inside and outside the United States. These groups meet regularly to talk baseball and share information and ideas. Often, meetings will feature former players and current or former baseball executives and media to discuss baseball. Since 1972, SABR has staged an annual national convention, growing from 23 participants to an average of more than 450 registrants in the last decade. One long weekend each summer, SABR members gather from all over to immerse themselves in the game they love. The schedule includes research presentations (historical and statistical), guest speakers, bestowing of the Bob Davids Award, question and answer sessions with former players, tours, ballpark trips, research committee meetings, a vending area, and an often amazing trivia contest, with one track for teams of four participants and another for individual players. For many SABR convention-goers, the best part is just finding a space to talk baseball with friends old and new.
SABR is easy to join, there’s no secret handshake required. Membership dues include this year’s publication schedule (The SABR Bulletin, Baseball Research Journal, The National Pastime, a special publication and the latest membership directory) mailed to you at no extra charge. Membership makes part of an amazing network to ask and answer questions and share the highest level of enthusiasm for baseball. Special rates are offered for students and seniors.
