- MONTHLY LUNCHEONS: Monthly Luncheons are still occuring on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Join your fellow SABR member for some food and baseball chatter at the Wynkoop Brewery in Denver’s LoDo area. The next lunch is March 17th at noon, so have some corned beef and cabbage as well if you choose!

- GAME OF THE MONTH: Mark your calendars! The Game of the Month is ready for the 2010 season (which can’t start soon enough!). Tickets are $20, and all reservations should be made with Paul Parker. Please mail checks made out to “Rocky Mountain SABR” to:

- CHAPTER MEETING: Our next chapter meeting will be May 15th before the Rockies take on the Washington Nationals. More details to follow. If you have research you would like to present or share, please notify Paul Parker.

Hot Stove Meeting

The annual Hot Stove meeting of the Rocky Mountain chapter of SABR, the Society for American Baseball Research, will take place at the Breckenridge Brewery, 2220 Blake Street in Denver, on Saturday, January 30th, 2010, beginning at 10:00 am. The meeting is being held in conjunction with SABR chapters around the country as part of SABR Day In America, and will include the following:

1. a research presentation by Kyle Banister;

2. a point-counterpoint debate on current issues in the Game. The topic this time will be instant replay;

3. a gameshow style trivia contest

4. a silent auction

The meeting is free and open to SABR members and their guests, as well as the general public. If you would like to participate in either the trivia contest or the debate, please indicate so by commenting to this post.

Also, if you have any items you would like to donate to the auction, please let us know.

Banquet recap

For those of you who missed the Rocky Mountain SABR banquet on November 13, here’s a brief summary of the evening’s events.

With 63 guests in attendance, plus a plethora of artwork and silent auction items, the Rocky Mountain SABR banquet was a night of fun, fellowship, and baseball. With snow delaying the arrival of some guests, including emcee Reed Johnson, some chapter announcements were made and the results of the election were announced for the 2010-11 term. Chuck Brodsky opened up the festivities with a pre-dinner set of music, delighting the crowd with his unique combination of witty lyrics and baseball themed music. Along with listening to Chuck, guests took in the many works of art and lots up for auction, including the live painting of portraits of the evening’s speakers. After a delicious dinner, SABR member Andy Strasberg discussed the history of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”, America’s third most-recited song. He coupled that with his tale of being Roger Maris’ biggest fan. Next up, Bobby Meacham talked about his playing days and impressions of the game today, in particular sharing his view of one of his successors as shortstop of the New York Yankees, Derek Jeter. Paul Parker then presented the John Zajc award to Matt Mitchell for his service to the chapter. Lastly, keynote speaker Dick Monfort discussed the philosophy and state of the Rockies organization, and fielded questions from the attendees about the team’s goings on. Chuck Brodsky then returned to close the evening’s entertainment while the silent auction closed and the winners happily claimed their items. A special thanks goes out to those key volunteers who helped organized and facilitate the event.

In the article about thursday’s game, in which Renck barely mentions the game, he says; “The Dodgers have lost four straight, their champagne a vintage until they clinched a postseason berth Thursday when the Rockies eliminated the Braves.” In fact, the Dodgers clinched a post season birth several days ago.

Banquet Registration Underway

Registration for our 12th annual banquet is officially underway. You can sign up for the baseball music and art themed event on Friday, November 13th, 2009 at the Denver Athletic Club simply by clicking on “Banquet” on this homepage and pulling up the registration form. Click on the form, print it out and mail it in. It’s that easy!

Other stuff: If you see this today (Wed, Sept 16) before noon, today is our monthly luncheon at the Wynkoop. Also, if you’re planning to attend the Sat, Sept 26 game with the group, please get me $20 per ticket ASAP. We’re also doing the Thurs, Oct 1 game.
